Community Building Tip #1: Keep It Super Simple

๐Ÿคฏ My 5-year-old explained what I do for work in 4 words.

โ€œWhat do you do for work?โ€ You know that question some of us dread at family gatherings or networking events because we canโ€™t figure out how to explain our job in a simple way (especially those of us who wear more hats than we can count)?

Well, yesterday, I asked my 5-year-old what I do for work, and this was his answer:

โ€œYou bring people together!โ€ ๐Ÿค

It struck me that, as adults, we often overcomplicate things. Yet, kids have this incredible gift of simplicity.

Seeing how my son understood the core of my role as a community builder reminded me how important it is to speak in a way that everyone understands. From website copy and landing pages to social media captions and CTAs.

Think about the ๐—ž.๐—œ.

If itโ€™s not simple enough for a child or someone outside your industry to grasp, chances are youโ€™re not converting or seeing the growth you want.

I encourage you to share more about what you do with your kids, family members, or friends and then ask them:

  • What they think you do for a living

  • What you sell

  • What you create

  • What feelings or thoughts does your branding/SM content evoke

And take those insights to help you refresh your SM bio, captions and CTAs, intro, elevator pitch, messaging, etc., to ensure you are keeping things simple enough for anyone to understand. ๐ŸŽฏ
